Donald Trump and key allies have accused Omar of obtaining citizenship fraudulently, fantasizing openly about denaturalizing her and expelling her from the country. The congresswoman has consistently denied the accusations, though Trump has repeatedly made them national news with gratuitous attacks against Omar, who along with Representative Rashida Tlaib became the United States’s first Muslim congresswoman in 2019. — Federal agents search Ilhan Omar’s home as part of fraud investigation – reports
And the war is continuing—even though Iran and its adversaries have at least temporarily stepped back from direct attacks and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has recovered to a certain extent (Iranian shipments excluded). At the UN General Assembly last month, Donald Trump promised (yet again) that he would annihilate Iran if the country doesn’t agree to some kind of peace deal. Despite the fact that the Iranian economy is reeling as a result of war and sanctions, which the government in Tehran is now acknowledging, Iranian leaders have pledged not to surrender. As if these effects aren’t enough, the Iran War is also setting into motion a number of other geopolitical transformations—in Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, the Gulf states, and even further afield. Trump and his Israeli partner-in-crime Benjamin Netanyahu expected a quick war, a tidy regime change in Tehran, and the collapse of its “axis of resistance.” Instead they now face a Pandora’s boxful of unintended consequences. — The Geopolitical Earthquake of the Iran War
Video: Michael Hudson: The Coming AI Recession Will Be Worse Than 2008 Is artificial intelligence the technology of the future, or the next great bubble? Michael Hudson joins me for another Geopolitical Economy Hour to discuss the looming AI economic crash. Michael compares the frenzy to the dot-com bubble and the railroad bubbles of the 19th century, while the scale of this one outmatches all what we have previously seen. We examine Washington’s plan to turn AI into a monopoly choke point on the world economy and to make everyone dependent on proprietary technology so AI billionaires can continue to collect monopoly rents. China’s open-source approach, however, is built around finite tasks and is already undercutting it. Meanwhile, the surging electricity and water costs driven by skyrocketing data centre projects are falling on local communities.
S.F. sets another monthly high tide record — flooding hits parts of Bay Area Just one day after San Francisco set a new October high tide record, a gauge at Crissy Field surpassed that mark again when it measured a water level 1.73 feet above the average highest daily tide. It surpasses Saturday’s tide of 1.62 feet. Before this weekend, the previous record high October tide of 1.4 feet was set just last year. The observed water level both days was more than 0.2 of a foot higher than the National Weather Service forecast, and nearly a foot and a half higher than tide chart predictions. Tides are predicted to be more than a half-foot higher on Oct. 27 and 28.
Marine biologist fears effects of increasing carbon dioxide levels on sealife Marine biologist fears effects of increasing carbon dioxide levels on sealife Marine biologists say aquatic life is facing growing challenges as the ocean absorbs more carbon dioxide. Victoria University marine biologist Dr Christopher Cornwall said carbon dioxide released by burning fossil fuels was absorbed by the ocean, changing the chemistry of seawater and making it more acidic. The process, known as ocean acidification, affects organisms such as calcareous seaweeds and abalone, which rely on calcium carbonate to form and maintain their protective structures. Increasing carbon dioxide levels could also fuel the growth of some opportunistic species, while marine heatwaves and coastal darkening were creating further pressures on ocean ecosystems, Dr Cornwall said. “So what’s happening is our oceans are becoming warmer as the world is becoming warmer,” he said. Coastal darkening occurs when sediment washed into the sea reduces the amount of light reaching underwater environments. It can affect photosynthesis in marine plants and algae. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions was the solution, Dr Cornwall said. “If we can do that, it’s going to be the biggest thing we can do to stop the effects of climate change manifesting even more intensely.”
The Gulf has entered a new era of instability. If its leaders think they can rely on old alliances, they are wrongThe latest attack by Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia may prove to be more calamitous for the region than the world imagines On Saturday, Houthi rebels launched a shocking and deadly attack on Saudi Arabia’s capital city, Riyadh. At the time of writing, the missile strike on King Khalid international airport has killed at least 13 people and left 300 injured, marking a significant turn in a regional conflagration that is only getting more intense. It was the single most deadly attack on any Gulf country since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran in February. In Saudi Arabia, a country that is unaccustomed to such fatalities, the death toll is bewilderingly high and likely to prompt a bloody response.

As US medical debt grows, AI will be used more to collect it The debt-collection ecosystem will change as AI takes notes in exam rooms, codes visits and sends billing messages Medical debt is expected to grow in coming years as Republican-led health cuts come into force this winter. As it does, a changing world of medical billing and debt collection awaits patients: one where artificial intelligence increasingly listens, codes, bills and collects.
