PLANETARY HEALTH CHECK 2026

Executive Summary

The Planetary Health Check (PHC) provides an annual assessment of the state of the Planet. It is structured around the Planetary Boundaries: the nine critical processes that regulate stability, resilience, and the conditions that support life on Earth. For each boundary, one or two indicators, known as control variables, are used to assess its status. These show whether conditions remain within the Safe Operating Space – the range in which the risk of destabilizing the Planet remains low. Beyond a boundary lies the Zone of Increasing Risk, followed by the High-Risk Zone, where the risk of large-scale and potentially irreversible changes becomes high. The 2026 Planetary Health Check finds that seven of the nine Planetary Boundaries are transgressed, and trends for all seven continue to point in the wrong direction, indicating further deterioration in the conditions that support longterm planetary stability.

Seven Out of Nine Planetary Boundaries are Transgressed

• Climate Change – strongly transgressed.

• Change in Biosphere Integrity – strongly transgressed.

• Land System Change – transgressed.

• Freshwater Change – transgressed.

• Modification of Biogeochemical Flows – strongly transgressed.

• Ocean Acidification – transgressed.

• Atmospheric Aerosol Loading – within the Safe Operating Space globally, but with significant regional transgression.

• Stratospheric Ozone Depletion – within the Safe Operating Space.

• Introduction of Novel Entities – strongly transgressed.

How To Protect Elections and Stop ICE by Any Means Necessary!: Ten Theses on the 2026 Minnesota General StrikeJanuary 2026 saw some of the most significant developments in the recent history of the American class struggle. The ICE murder of Renee Good set off an explosive anti-ICE movement, culminating in a de facto political general strike. The subsequent murder of Alex Pretti threatened to spread the movement nationally, forcing Trump to back off, at least temporarily. What conclusions can we draw from this experience?

Minneapolis General Strike: The biggest moment in recent labor historyThe biggest moment in recent labor history The Minneapolis General Strike took place on January 23rd across the US. It was a large-scale labor stoppage and protest in opposition to expanded federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and the administration’s mass deportation policies. Labor unions, community organizations, and faith leaders called for this general strike, making it the first general strike in the US in 80 years. Their demands include: ICE leave Minnesota now, the agent who killed Renee Good be held legally accountable, no further federal funding for ICE, and for Minnesotan and national companies to become 4th amendment businesses- ceasing economic relations with ICE and refusing ICE entry or using their property for staging grounds. It was estimated that tens of thousands of protesters attended and hundreds of businesses across Minnesota closed in solidarity with this movement, despite the bitter cold (temperatures as low as minus 20 Fahrenheit).

IDN trained some 30,000 constitutional observers to document and record interactions between ICE and Minnesotans during the surge.

Why Capitalism Won’t Save the ClimateAlthough the social and environmental costs of renewable energy technologies are often gestured at parenthetically in left discourse about climate action, they are rarely given serious and sustained attention. It is generally assumed that because a rapid transition to renewables is necessary to avoid full-on climate disaster, we will simply have to accept these costs without too much critical scrutiny. In an interview with Spectre’s Dan Boscov-Ellen, Joshua Frank draws on his recent book Bad Energy: The AI Hucksters, Rogue Lithium Extractors, and Wind Industrialists Who Are Selling Off Our Future (Haymarket 2026) to highlight the dangers of that assumption.

The Global Seasonal Climate Update provides authoritative information about large-scale climate drivers. These include the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and tropical Atlantic sea-surface temperatures which all impact seasonal temperature and rainfall. It complements WMO’s El Niño/La Niña Update, which is issued quarterly.

Her attorney says the threats followed the lawsuit. None of the men has been charged, and three deny any misconduct.
