2026: Dawning of the Age of Ecocide!: Experts warn that the current record-breaking heatwaves and global droughts are just the start. of the climate catastrophe.
There are varying degrees of scientific certainty concerning which sub-systems may be approaching critical thresholds and how soon large-scale irreversible change could occur. In general, the probabilities of reaching tipping points rise significantly as global warming increases. Despite this uncertainty, there are improved methods and growing scientific evidence that several key Earth sub-systems are at increasing risk of reaching (or have already begun crossing) tipping points, including: the long term melt of large polar continental ice sheets ; the widespread loss of warm-water coral reefs ; the shift of parts of the Amazon rainforest to savanna-like conditions; the weakening or collapse of deep-water formation/ circulation processes in the oceans. The Brief stresses that tipping of any major Earth system would have catastrophic impacts on humans and the planet. The interaction of these systems can lead to destabilising cascades, meaning that irreversible change can spread from one Earth sub-system to many. Even without crossing tipping points, major societal impacts of climate change are already occurring and likely to become more intense and widespread. Streets running dark in both directions. A refrigerator standing open. A shuttered Family Dollar in a neighborhood with few other options. No power. In the United States of America. Day six, then day eight, then day ten. NIPSCO, the utility that powers the region, left Gary, more than three-quarters Black, off the restoration list. … On the sixth night without electricity, a woman in Gary, Indiana stepped outside with her phone and started filming. The System That Cannot Admit Failure Rentier capitalism protects finance, monopoly and inherited privilege while suppressing the mixed economy that once drove industrial development. … Michael Hudson: It was the industrial classes that said, we want governments to subsidize our industry by taking over natural monopolies; they should provide transportation, communication, and water service. These are public utilities, and the government should provide them at cost or at a subsidized rate; otherwise, we’re all going to have to pay monopoly prices if we leave this infrastructure in private hands. That was what made capitalism revolutionary. And of course, the interests of land rent, monopoly rent, and the financial interest fought back, and that’s what essentially derailed the whole line of industrial capitalism from Adam Smith, Mill, and Marx, and the American protectionists who also tried to make America rich by public investment and breaking up monopolies, by Teddy Roosevelt, and subordinating private rentier interest to public productivity. That’s really what the fight against socialism today and against Marx is: really a fight against everything Adam Smith and Ricardo and John Stuart Mill and Marx and the industrialists were fighting for, a free market, free from economic rent, from the special interests.
