Middle East Crisis Live: Trump Uses Expletive-Ridden Social Media Post to Threaten Iran’s Infrastructure US president tells Iran: ‘Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell’; Iran spokesman accuses Trump of ‘reckless moves’ Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy for communications at the Iranian president’s office, has said Iran will open the Strait of Hormuz only after receiving compensation for war damages, paid via a “new legal regime” based on transit fees.     Tabatabaei also said Trump has resorted to profanity “out of sheer desperation and rage” and accused the US president of sparking an “all-out war in the region.” “The Strait of Hormuz will reopen only when, under a new legal regime, the damages from the imposed war are fully compensated from a portion of the transit toll revenues,” Tabatabaei posted on social media.

It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose should now be threatened by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist; the threat is rather to life itself. —  Rachel Carson, The Sea Around Us.

Videos: The Mass Media Are Evil But They’re Also Really Dumb, And Other Notes The New York Times has printed an article with the headline “A North American Treaty Organization Without America?”, apparently having spent the entire Ukraine war completely unaware that NATO stands for North ATLANTIC Treaty Organization.

Their ‘Founding Fathers’ and MineTheir ‘Founding Fathers’ and Mine                                 I. The Forefathers of the First American Revolution

Sons of LibertySons of Liberty The Sons of Liberty was a radical organization in Colonial America created to carry out public demonstrations against British policies that forced Americans to pay taxes without representation in Parliament. Many men associated with the group are considered Founding Fathers of the United States.

Nuclear Plants ‘Must Never Be Attacked,’ Says Watchdog as Iran Reports US-Israeli Strike at Bushehr Facility The International Atomic Energy Agency warned of “the paramount importance of adhering to the seven pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security during a conflict.” The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency on Saturday demanded “maximum military restraint” from the US and Israel as it confirmed reports that strikes had targeted a location close to Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, killing at least one person.

Courts keep ruling against Trump. But they can’t save our democracy singlehandedly  Decisions on the White House ballroom, public media and journalists’ access to the Pentagon are heartening. But restoring our institutions is up to us. In another one of those strange and unprecedented moments of the Trump years, the president of the United States showed up at the supreme court the other day. No other presidents have done so, probably because they – to varying degrees – respected the separation of power among the three branches of US government.

Imperialism, and Genocide! Systemic Racism, Capitalism, Colonialism, Neocolonialism, Imperialism, and Genocide! United States Capitalism has played a major part in most genocides! “In the final analysis, racism is evil because its ultimate logic is genocide. Hitler was a sick and tragic man who carried racism to its logical conclusion. He ended up leading a nation to the point of killing about 6 million Jews. This is the tragedy of racism because its ultimate logic is genocide. If one says that I am not good enough to live next door to him; if one says that I am not good enough to eat at a lunch counter, or to have a good, decent job, or to go to school with him merely because of my race, he is saying consciously or unconsciously that I do not deserve to exist.” — “The Other America” by Martin Luther King Jr.

The Environmental Crisis Is a Capitalist Crisis One of humanity’s greatest challenges today is the environmental crisis, which threatens our very existence. Our latest dossier explores its class character, showing that the climate catastrophe is a product of capitalism’s relentless drive for accumulation.     Capitalism Will Not Solve the Environmental Crisis     The environmental crisis is one of the greatest challenges we face today. At its root lie the capitalist mode of production and the logic of capital accumulation pursued by the ruling classes of the Global North and South. The devastation wrought by capitalism is plain for all to see, as climate change intensifies and accelerates year after year, threatening the very existence of humanity. As Fidel Castro warned in his speech at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, ‘An important biological species is in danger of disappearing due to the rapid and progressive liquidation of its natural living conditions: humanity’.1

Ecocide, genocide, capitalism and colonialism: Consequences for indigenous peoples and glocal ecosystems environmentsAbstract Continuing injustices and denial of rights of indigenous peoples are part of the long legacy of colonialism. Parallel processes of exploitation and injustice can be identified in relation to non-human species and/or aspects of the natural environment. International law can address some extreme examples of the crimes and harms of colonialism through the idea and legal definition of genocide, but the intimately related notion of ecocide that applies to nature and the environment is not yet formally accepted within the body of international law. In the context of this special issue reflecting on the development of green criminology, the article argues that the concept of ecocide provides a powerful tool. To illustrate this, the article explores connections between ecocide, genocide, capitalism and colonialism and discusses impacts on indigenous peoples and on local and global (glocal) ecosystems.

The Changing Antarctic Peninsula Highlights1. Antarctic Peninsula is warming at twice the rate of the global average (0.27°C per decade).           2.  Substantial and irreversible damage occurs if global warming exceeds 2°C.  3. Changes in the Antarctic Peninsula have global consequences.          Sea ice loss, ice shelf collapse and glacier mass loss will result in selfsustaining processes that will amplify polar warming and influence global climate, sea level and ocean circulation. 4.  Changes on the Antarctic Peninsula will influence species migration and loss, with impacts on krill, fishing, and food chains for large marine predators like whales, seals and penguins. Extreme events have already devastated penguin colonies, for example through sea ice loss or flooding of breeding colonies.  5. Following through and achieving the country pledges and net zero targets put forward at COP30 would avoid the most significant impacts by keeping global warming to less than 2°C.
