‘Roll Out The Barrels’ — Sailors Had Barrels Of ‘Fun’ Shooting Barrels of Toxins Off U.S. Coasts!:

Barrels of radioactive waste are leaking plutonium and cesium into one of the West Coast’s richest ocean wildlife sanctuaries, a Federal study has found. The study, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said at least 47,500 drums of radioactive waste were dumped from 1946 to 1970 in the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, about 30 miles off San Francisco, and pose a potential environmental hazard. — Atomic Waste Reported Leaking in Ocean Sanctuary Off California

Sailors like George Albernaz, assigned to the USS Calhoun County in the ’50s, were left to decide how they’d go about their job dumping the materials, typically low-level nuclear waste. They would take about 300 barrels per trip out into the ocean from docks on the Atlantic Coast and roll them to the edge of the ship. When the ship tipped just right on the waves, they would push the barrels over. Most of them, filled with dense metals, salts, and tools encased in concrete inside the barrel, would sink right away. Barrels that bobbed back up were shot with a rifle by a man standing on the end of the ship, which usually sent it directly to the bottom of the sea. But the rifle fire wasn’t always enough. ”—  When the Navy Sank Nuclear Waste With Machine Guns

Shipping logs show that every month in the years after World War II, thousands of barrels of acid sludge laced with this synthetic chemical were boated out to a site near Catalina and dumped into the deep ocean — so vast that, according to common wisdom at the time, it would dilute even the most dangerous poisons. Regulators reported in the 1980s that the men in charge of getting rid of the DDT waste sometimes took shortcuts and just dumped it closer to shore. And when the barrels were too buoyant to sink on their own, one report said, the crews simply punctured them. The ocean buried the evidence for generations, but modern technology can take scientists to new depths. In 2011 and 2013, Valentine and his research team were able to identify about 60 barrels and collect a few samples during brief forays at the end of other research missions. One sediment sample showed DDT concentrations 40 times greater than the highest contamination recorded at the Superfund site — a federally designated area of hazardous waste that officials had contained to shallower waters near Palos Verdes. — L.A.’S Coast Was Once a DDT Dumping Ground

Making America Sicker Again!: Where the President Goes, Coronavirus Follows: Analysis Shows Spike in Covid-19 Cases After Trump Rallies “These rallies offer a boost to the president’s ego but risk leaving behind a trail of sickness and increased strain on local public health departments and medical systems.” Half of the 22 campaign rallies held by President Donald Trump between June and September were followed by county-level increases in Covid-19 cases, suggesting that these frequent in-person events attracting thousands of people may be unnecessarily intensifying the spread of coronavirus and “endangering host communities” throughout the United States. LAID BARE:  The Scandal of Expendable Workers Before, during and After Covid It is simple enough. The government had one eye on the budget and another on the Tory base, clamouring for an end to pettifogging rules and a loss of personal liberties. There had to be a swift return to ‘normality’, and that meant a return to work. From July 2020 on, ministers embarked on a three-month mission to get us back into our ‘Covid-secure’ workplaces. It is simple enough. The government had one eye on the budget and another on the Tory base, clamouring for an end to pettifogging rules and a loss of personal liberties. There had to be a swift return to ‘normality’, and that meant a return to work.BIOHAZARD: INFECTIONS. They Were Warned. They Knew What To Do. They Did Nothing. Long before Covid-19, unions made repeat warnings about the need to prepare for ‘emerging threats’. Hazards editor Rory O’Neill exposes the decades of inaction that paved the way for the pandemic and left us without a workplace biohazards law. No-one was prepared. Covid-19 was unforeseen, bigger and more deadly than anyone could have anticipated. We didn’t know how to respond, but reacted quickly to limit the harm from what became the biggest workplace killer of modern times. As politicians and their advisers wrote, tweaked and rewrote guidance, they maintained they were responding to emerging science, dealing with ‘unknowns’. It is a fatalism that sits uneasily alongside the facts. The warnings had been repeated over decades. There had been agreements that global rules were necessary. They were just never acted on. The Policy of “Herd Immunity” Pushes Europe’s Health Care System Toward the Abyss With more than 50,000 new cases recorded in France on Sunday, there is a clear danger that hospitals and emergency rooms will once again be overwhelmed. The limited measures announced by various European governments following record numbers of new coronavirus cases in multiple countries over the weekend cannot hide the disaster caused by their premature policy of resuming work and reopening schools. On Sunday, records were broken in Italy, France and Germany. There were 21,273 cases of COVID-19 detected in Italy. According to data reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for Infectious Diseases, there were 11,176 more cases in Germany than the day before. France recorded 52,010 cases, up from 45,000 the day before. By Anthony Torres

Health care systems face collapse across Eastern Europe amid resurgent COVID-19 pandemic Poland’s leading epidemiologist pointed to parallels between current conditions in Poland and those in Italy earlier this year, when the health care system collapsed due to the number of infections. The dramatic increase in coronavirus infections is placing increased pressure on Europe’s health care systems. In Eastern European countries, where health care has been destroyed over the past three decades by privatisations and austerity measures, conditions are especially dire. The situation is almost out of control in Poland. Approximately 14,000 cases are being recorded daily. This is about the same number of cases recorded in Germany, but in a country with a population of 38 million—less than half of Germany’s. Polish medical experts believe that the number of undetected cases is extremely high. Statistics show that just 0.9 tests are carried out for every 1,000 residents. The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for  themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare
