United States Coronavirus Pandemic Crisis: Lessons to be Learned

(6/o5/21 Update) If You Want Pandemics, Build Factory Farms It should be made clear that the source of COVID-19 is still unknown, despite much of our media claiming the source to be the infamous wet market in Wuhan and the UN subsequently calling to end all of such markets 1. True; many of the first cases had links to the wet market in Wuhan. However the first known case – patient zero – emerged in November 2019, with no links whatsoever to the Wuhan market. Animals too were tested from this market, again no positive tests 2, 3, 4. The jury is out.

From: We Must Choose: Capital Or Life!: Abolish Vaccine Patents Now!: The corporate economy, blind faith in the market and the pursuit of profit have proven to be incompatible with the well-being of Humanity. Health is not a commodity. Economic recovery cannot be at the expense of health or the rights of the majority. We must choose: capital or life. We must act quickly and forcefully, create a global strategy of equal access and universal guarantee to high quality health care.
For all these reasons, we demand :

  • The suspension of private patents on all technologies, knowledge, treatments and vaccines related to Covid-19.

  • The elimination of trade secrets and the publication of information on the production costs and public investments used, in a clear and publicly accessible manner.

  • Transparency and public scrutiny at all stages of vaccine development.

  • Universal, free and open access to vaccination and treatment.

  • The expropriation and socialization under popular control of the private pharmaceutical industry as a basis for a universal public health system that promotes the production of generic treatments and medicines.

  • Increased public investment and budgets for public health and community care policies, including more staff, higher salaries and improved working conditions in these sectors.

  • The introduction of taxes on wealth (wealth and income of the richest 1%) to finance the effort against the pandemic and to ensure a socially just and ecologically sustainable exit from the various crises of global capitalism.

  • The suspension of sovereign debtpayments for the duration of the pandemic and the cancellation of illegitimate debts and those contracted to finance the fight against the virus.

Lift the Blockade! — Stop the Pandemic!:  Cuba Has Enough Antivirals to Help Other Countries Treat Coronavirus Havana – Cuba said on Friday it has enough reserves of an antiviral drug which has been used to treat COVID-19 in China to cover the country’s demand and also that of the international community. Eduardo Martinez, president of state group of BioCubaFarma medications, said: “We are receiving requests from a large group of countries that are asking us to make it available. “We have the capacity to supply it without risking the quantities required for the country.” The company manufactures the antiviral Interferon alpha 2B, which has been combined with other drugs to treat the coronavirus.  It has been produced since January at the Chinese-Cuban plant ChangHeber in the Chinese province of Jilin.

7/3/20 Coronavirus Update

Signe WilkinsonA Statue to American Leadership in the War Against COVID-19Even though the U.S. Intelligence Reports From January and February Warned About a Likely Pandemic, the Response of Our Anti-Science Government to the Coronavirus Pandemic Has Been a Fiasco!!!!

The Federal Government was completely unprepared.:

When President Trump took office in 2017, the White House’s National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense survived the transition intact. Its mission was the same as when I was asked to lead the office, established after the Ebola epidemic of 2014: to do everything possible within the vast powers and resources of the U.S. government to prepare for the next disease outbreak and prevent it from becoming an epidemic or pandemic.    One year later, I was mystified when the White House dissolved the office, leaving the country less prepared for pandemics like covid-19. The U.S. government’s slow and inadequate response to the new coronavirus underscores the need for organized, accountable leadership to prepare for and respond to pandemic threats.   In a health security crisis, speed is essential.    When this new coronavirus emerged, there was no clear White House-led structure to oversee our response, and we lost valuable time. Yes, we have capable and committed global and national disease-prevention and management organizations, as well as state and local health departments, all working overtime now. But even in prepared cities like Seattle, health systems are struggling to test patients and keep pace with growing caseloads. The specter of rapid community transmission and exponential growth is real and daunting. The job of a White House pandemics office would have been to get ahead: to accelerate the response, empower experts, anticipate failures, and act quickly and transparently to solve problems. — I Ran the White House Pandemic Office. Trump Closed It.

Even though the World Health Organization had, in March 2020, offered  coronavirus test kits to the world  and had advice on how to combat the coronavirus pendemic in March of   2020, “Effective quarantine is essential for tackling the coronavirus and this cannot happen without extensive testing for covid-19, says World Health Organization assistant director general Bruce Aylward. ‘To actually stop the virus,  China] had to do rapid testing of any suspect case, immediate isolation of anyone who was a confirmed or suspected case, and then quarantine the close contacts for 14 days so that they could figure out if any of them were infected,; Aylward told New Scientistin an exclusive interview.’’’Those were the measures that stopped transmission in China, not the big travel restrictions and lockdowns.’” — WHO Expert: We Need More Testing to Beat Coronavirus  The White House refused to take advantage of their information. And since then, the Trump adminstration has refuse help fom the World Health Organization, and even stop funding it!

Due Trump’s inaction and deprave indifference, as of today, there have been 2,890,588 coronavirus cases  and 132,1 01 coronavirus deaths! Trump has made the United States the world leader in case and coronavirus deaths!

Trump, although he had a late start, has made ‘America great again’!: Due Trump’s misleadership and depraved indifferance, the United States is the Cornavirus world’s leader. — With over 2,255,271 Coronaviruus cases, the United States is Number 1 in the World!  And  it is alsot he world’s number 1 in the World in Coronavirus Deaths! The total Uited States Coronavirus  deaths now, amount to Over 25% of the World’s Total Coronavus Deaths!

3/22/20 Update:  If The United States Had Enough Coronavirus Test Kits Big Travel Restrictions And Lockdowns Would Not Be Necessary!:

Effective quarantine is essential for tackling the coronavirus and this cannot happen without extensive testing for covid-19, says World Health Organization assistant director general Bruce Aylward. “To actually stop the virus,  China] had to do rapid testing of any suspect case, immediate isolation of anyone who was a confirmed or suspected case, and then quarantine the close contacts for 14 days so that they could figure out if any of them were infected,” Aylward told New Scientistin an exclusive interview. “Those were the measures that stopped transmission in China, not the big travel restrictions and lockdowns.”WHO Expert: We Need More Testing to Beat Coronavirus

Even though the U.S. Intelligence Reports From January and February Warned About Aa Likely Pandemic, the Response of Our Anti-Science Government to the Coronavirus Pandemic Has Been a Fiasco!!!!

From  U.S. Federal Response to Coronavirus a ‘Fiasco:

You know, Judy, the American response has been deeply disappointing. In almost every way, our response has been far less effective than every other major country in the world. It’s baffling, actually. We have, in the CDC, arguably the best public health agency in the world. All of us thought that the CDC was going to — was prepared and was going to help fight this virus. The federal response has been a fiasco. — Ashish Jha, Harvard Global Health Institute (3/12/20)

Test Kits, Test Kits, Where Are The Test Kits?

The United States, even though it is the richest nation in the world, was the least prepared for the crisis of the of all of the industrial nations. The World Health Organization (WHO) had sent out coronavirus test kits for all nations, so that all of humanity would know the extent of the crisis.

The United States refused to accept the kits from the WHO. WHY?! Trump and his family and other capitalists were attempting to profit from the crisis!

To this day, March 22, 2020, due to vulture capitalism profiteering, there is still a huge shortage of test kits and a backlog in the labs to test the kits in the United States! The United States has no idea how far the virus has spread in the United States.

The United States, from Haiti. to Puerto Rico, etc., has been the world leader of Disasater Capitalism! (All of Trump’s life he has always tried to make ‘a quick buck’.) — The United States, from Haiti. to Puerto Rico, etc., has been the world leader of Disasater Capitalism!

  • Guess Who Previously Owned Health Insurance Co. Operating Coronavirus Testing Website President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior White House advisor Jared Kushner previously controlled a health insurance company that just unveiled a new website geared toward directing people to locations where they can be tested for the new COVID-19 coronavirus. The company, Oscar Health Insurance, had held itself outas being founded by Joshua Kushner, Jared’s brother. But state records uncovered by Mother Jones on Tuesday revealed that, when the business was incorporated in 2013, both Jared and Joshua owned Oscar’s parent company, Thrive Partners III GP LLC. • ‘Depraved’: Trump Reportedly Offered German Firm ‘Large Sum’ for Exclusive Rights to Coronavirus Vaccine“Trump wanted not only to control any new vaccine but also to make sure that it would only be available on a for-profit basis.”  German lawmakers and government officials voiced outrage at reporting Sunday that the Trump administration is seeking to secure exclusive rights to a potential coronavirus vaccine being developed by the German firm CureVac as the pandemic spreads and takes lives across the globe. The German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, citing an anonymous German government official, reported Sunday that the Trump administration offered CureVac $1 billion to hand the U.S. exclusive rights to a potential COVID-19 vaccine. • Trump Is Running a Pandemic Response like a Business — with Disastrous Results One of the most tired cliches in conservative politics is that we should run government like a business. Donald Trump’s disastrous response to the coronavirus pandemic is a perfect demonstration of how pernicious that philosophy can be when applied to governance. Much has already been said about how Donald Trump’s personality flaws and questionable policy obsessions have hampered America’s response to the growing pandemic. His narcissism leaves him unable to consider anything but his own political fortunes; his racism makes him treat an international medical problem like a clash-of-civilizations and border control problem; his incuriosity makes him unable to digest new information and respond with flexibility, much less act with foresight to head off problems. Whole books could be—and likely will be—written about how the convergent moral failings of the president and his favorite conservative infotainment networks have contributed to a ruinously incompetent response to the burgeoning pandemic crisis.

  • Robber Baron Government: Insider Trading: From Senate Intel Chair Sold up to $1.6 million in Stock Before Crash.Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) dumped between $582,029 and $1.56 million of his stocks on Feb. 13, days after writing a Fox News op-ed that said the U.S. is “better prepared than ever before” to face public health threats like the coronavirus, according to ProPublica. And Sens. Dianne Feinstein, Jim Inhofe made stock trades before coronavirus pandemic.

  • Why it matters: Reuters reported on Feb. 27 that as chairman of the secretive committee, Burr had been receiving daily updates from the intelligence community about the outbreak.

  • NPR reported earlier Thursday that Burr struck a much darker tone on Feb. 27, telling a private luncheon of constituents that the coronavirus is “much more aggressive in its transmission than anything that we have seen in recent history.” “It is probably more akin to the 1918 pandemic,” he added. The stock market has dropped about 30% since Burr’s sales.

  • We Are Facing Economic Collapse on Top of a Pandemic. What We Do Now Matters. As the COVID-19 virus spreads, the U.S. economy has begun to crumble like a house of cards. The sudden collapse of the economy is revealing how the “great economy” that Donald Trump has been boasting about on Twitter for the past three years was, in fact, a mirage caused by wild Wall Street rallies, and boosted by Trump’s massive tax cuts and deregulatory efforts, which rolled back all kinds of environmental standards with total disregard for the impact on public health and the climate crisis. As the shutdowns orchestrated to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus create financial ruin for individuals and businesses across the country, the economy is “teetering on collapse,” points out Robert Pollin, distinguished professor of economics and co-director of the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, in this exclusive interview for Truthout. • “The capitalist agribusiness factory farms are breeder grounds for epidemic and pandemics. The coronavirus is the latest virus that had been factory farm bred. “‘ The emergence of this new virus was predictable, even inevitable. To understand why requires looking back to an earlier virus that emerged in China, SARS. Like the new illness, SARS was caused by a coronavirus. In 2003, it exploded out of a “wet market’” in Guangdong where civet cats, raccoon dogs and multitudes of other animals were caged together in tight, squalid conditions.   It appears the new virus has similar origins.    The initial victims were all connected to a huge wholesale market in Wuhan, where a thousand stalls housed untold numbers of live animals kept in crowded, filthy conditions. Such “wet markets” are widespread in China, providing a newly affluent upper class with status-enhancing exotic animals to serve at dinner. Some people also believe that eating wild animals has health benefits.   The problem with the markets is that the unsanitary and tightly packed conditions in which the animals are held create perfect environments for the evolution of viruses that can jump from one species to another. The Chinese government shut down wet markets after the SARS outbreak,   but that ban was short-lived.” —Op-Ed: This New Coronavirus Was Preventable. But We Never Seem to Learn the Lessons of Former Outbreaks

The recent history of factory farming is explained  by Monica Nickelsburg In her essay  5 Modern Diseases Grown by Factory Farming

(2013)  Industrial agriculture is making us sick. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), nutritional scientists, and medical professionals warn against the health risks of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). There is a near consensus among experts that overuse of antibiotics, crowded and unsanitary livestock conditions, unnatural feed diets, and a lack of diversification are responsible for some serious global health risks. . . .

Here are five diseases that have been affected by CAFOs:

  1. Coli: The content of animal feed poses particular health risks. Traditionally, cattle subsisted on a grass-based diet, but government corn subsidies and demand for more fatty, marbled beef motivated farmers to switch over to grain-based feed. Enter E. coli.

  2. MRSA: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) is another bacteria that, thanks in part to factory farming, is popping up more than ever before. MRSA can be spread by human or animal carriers. It is abundant in our environment and its resistance to antibiotics can make it difficult to treat. More deaths in the U.S. are now attributed to MRSA infections than HIV/AIDS, according to a 2007 report published by the CDC.

  3. Campylobacter and Salmonella: Campylobacter is a foodborne illness that can cause diarrhea, nausea, fever, and abdominal pain. The infectious intestinal disease afflicts over 1.3 million Americans every year. It is also becoming increasingly drug-resistant, according to the CDC, growing to almost 25 percent drug-resistant in 2011, from 13 percent in 1997.

  4. Mad cow: While much rarer than the infectious bacteria listed above, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) can also be attributed to modern farming practices. Mad cow disease first appeared in the 1980s as a result of offal, a mixture of the organs and entrails of butchered cattle, in the feed. Farmers quickly learned that cannibalism can cause infectious neurodegenerative diseases in livestock.

  5. Obesity: In June the American Medical Association officially recognized obesity as a disease. Unsurprisingly, the nation with the largest industrial food industry also has the highest rates of obesity and diabetes. Every day factory farms in the United States grow 500 more calories per person than they did 25 years ago.

Lessons to Be Learned

1. Healthcare is a Right!  We Need A National Healthcare System That Can Provide Healthcare For All! — Not  Healthcare for Profit! Cuba has Such a System:  Cuba’s Interferon Alpha 2B, Successful in Treating COVID-19 For 40 years, Cuba has been using a molecule named Interferon Alpha 2B , which has successfully been used to combat the new Coronavirus in China and elsewhere. “The world has an opportunity to understand that health is not a commercial asset but a basic right,” Cuban doctor Luis Herrera, the creator of the Interferon Alfa 2-B medication, one of the most successful medications in the fight against COVID-19 told teleSUR Tuesday.

2. Wes Must End Factory Farming! We Must Start the Transformation of Factory Farming to Smaller, Scaled-Down, Organic Farming. Devoid of Chemicals!

In the present world, the rights of the capitalists to make a profit are in direct conflict with our basic rights. In this sense, the capitalist system has become a threat to humanity. The Coronavirus Pandemic is an example of a result of this conflict.

Since coronavirus is a global concern, it requires all of humanity to act collectively, in our overall interests for our survival.  correct the problem and to remove the obstacle of capitalism.

In the short run and in the long run. humanity requires a society where humanity has control where human needs supersede the right to make a profit! Such a society, a socialist society, is needed to ensure that all decisions affecting humanity are under the democratic control of humankind so that the production of goods will be done for the needs and survival of humanity instead of the production and the destruction of humanity and other species for profit.

With common ownership of the means of production, and common control and protection of all property and wealth, science and society will be in harmony with the ecosystem and humanity’s future.

With these goals, we can begin to build an effective movement. As we continue to organize against capitalism and its destructive course, we can and will transform the world!
