2026 State of the Climate Report ‘Shows a Planet Reaching Its Limits’“This is no longer a warning for the future; it is a diagnosis of the present,” the report’s authors warned. Earth’s life-support systems are “moving deeper into uncharted territory,” with greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean heat, and other vital indicators reaching unprecedented levels as human activity continues to push the planet toward points of no return, an international team of scientists warned Wednesday. “We are witnessing the rapid destabilization of the Earth’s climate system. This is no longer a warning for the future; it is a diagnosis of the present,” the authors of The 2026 State of the Climate Report wrote. “Earth’s life-support systems are being pushed beyond stable limits, with changes unfolding faster than our ability to respond.”
Video: Reports from the front line – Spain, France and Germany In this special episode of Against the Stream, we talk to comrades of the Revolutionary Communist International on the ground in Spain, France, and Germany about what’s happening, and about the huge potential for building the forces of communism. Today’s youth have grown up with nothing but war and crisis. As Marx explained, it’s the real conditions of society that shape consciousness. So it’s no surprise that many are reaching revolutionary conclusions on their own. Class questions are coming to the fore everywhere. A decade ago, protests were often framed as calls for ‘more democracy’, or for voting in a different government. Those illusions are gone. On the streets of Spain, tens of thousands are chanting ‘Esto es lucha de clases, no podemos hacer las paces’ [this is class struggle, we cannot make peace] and ‘Los invasores son los inversores’ [the invaders are the investors]. Whilst the causes of these youth-led movements vary from country to country, the same host of issues are present everywhere: militarism, racism, police violence, housing, Palestine, and the climate crisis. Together they’re feeding a revolutionary mood across the continent.Europe’s rulers have no way out. With inflation rising and governments buried in debt, they can’t keep the economy stable without provoking social and political upheaval. Years of austerity, decay, and inequality have built up the pressure, and now it’s bursting out.

The Collapsing World OrderAmerican polls show record levels of angst, fear, and deep concern about America’s present and future. This begs the question of whether a collapsing world order is at the root of these high levels of concern.
A CNN survey claims 67% of US adults feel either afraid or deeply pessimistic about the country’s future. A Pew Research Center Survey says 59% of Americans believe the country’s best years are behind it.
The American Psychiatric Association claims an “anxiety crisis” is widespread among American adults. “The global order is breaking down, driven by shifting centers of power, technological disruption and growing rivalry among nations.” (The Global Order is Breaking Down, but What Comes Next, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Sept 8, 2026)
Millions on the Streets for Lula Across Brazil: A View From the GroundLast Sunday, the fact that Lula brought out the largest crowd to São Paulo’s Paulista Avenue since the Diretas Já movement in the waning days of the U.S.-backed military dictatorship, with estimates of over 1 million, has rightfully occupied a lot of headline space, even in bourgeois media outlets like Globo which notoriously lies about crowd size at leftist marches and protests. But across Brazil, scores of other campaign marches have brought out huge crowds in the past few days, even in small and mid sized cities, like the conservative city of Uberlândia, which saw 50,000 people come out to show their support for Lula on October 8.
What makes Marxism scientific? – a scientific enquiry“There is no royal road to science, and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits.” – Karl Marx, Preface to the French edition of Capital.[1… The scientific method of Marxism arises out of the development of life itself – in what Marx called mankind’s metabolic exchange with nature. Marxism is the most conscious and consistent expression of that ongoing process. It is a result derived from that process, applied back to it as a method. Without its application and its result, the method is an empty abstraction. Without a correct method, the enquiry will go astray and not reach a correct result. And the result, the aim of every enquiry, can only stand if it has been based on a correct method and proven through the necessary course of the enquiry itself. What emerges is the dialectical unity of the Marxist scientific method, its application and result, none of which can stand separately. It is precisely in the necessary interconnection of each link to the others that a science is justified. This is no longer a dead set of rigid principles, but a living concrete science which is deepened with every application. That is the scientific method of Marxism. Let us begin.
Is 2027 going to be a particularly destabilizing year? I would love it if folks here could argue against me, though I fear you’re more likely to come up with even more factors.: The major factors coalescing in 2027 that I see are: Monster El Niño – Certain Risk – Temperatures from the El Niño event are likely to peak in December, but the aftereffects will go on well into 2027. So many potential outcomes. But to put it in economic terms, the biggest factor is widespread agricultural disruptions. Central Asia, Central America, and Southern Africa may be worst hit, but many other places will suffer as well.
Fertilizer Shortages – High Risk – The Iran war is unlikely to end any time soon, and global fertilizer markets may continue to be destabilized. Again we’re looking at significant global agricultural impacts.
Diesel/Oil Shortages – High Risk – An outcome of the Iran war, the Ukraine war, and the Yemen war, none of which seem to be cooling off. Global oil and diesel reserves are being severely depleted, leaving no buffer. Edit: And more and more refineries are being destroyed (and can take 10 years to rebuild). Likely outcomes are widespread economic impacts… including on agriculture (industrial agriculture runs on diesel).
Market Bubble – Medium-high Risk – Warnings are continuing to escalate that the American stock market and economy are being propped up by AI expansion and that this bubble could burst soon (ie, 2027). Many economic fundamentals are showing that the market/economy is overextended. Impacts would be a retraction or crash of the US and then global economy.
European War – Medium Risk – Many/most NATO countries are actively preparing for a potential war with Russia. So many variables and uncertainties here that it’s anyone’s guess what will happen. But it’s worth noting that Russia has recently lowered their policy for when they would go nuclear.
Other lower-risk concerns – All the usual collapse stuff like potential pandemics (outbreaks seem to be increasing significantly), exceptionally destructive environmental catastrophes, new wars, malignant AI, and so on. However, a particularly 2027 risk is the possibility of a non-peaceful transfer of power in the US. The president’s party is expected to get trounced in the midterms, and we can’t entirely rule out that the president might fight against the transfer of power in Congress in January.
Combinations of above effects. None of these things are happening in a vacuum. Civilizational deterioration/collapse is mostly measured in economic terms. Putting several of these factors together can lead to significant-to-enormous economic impacts.
Am I wrong, or is 2027 going to be exceptionally “interesting times?” And if we do see a major economic retraction, will we ever recover from it, or will that be the new baseline?
