Black Wealth Takes a NosediveThe newly released data from the Federal Reserve shows the median net worth of Black American households declining by 25 percent, falling from $49,100 in 2022 to $36,800 in 2025. Black Americans already had the least wealth of the major racial groups, but since White, Hispanic, and Asian Americans all experienced increases in their net worth (Figure 1), Black households have fallen even further behind.

Just in Time for Midterm Elections: Trump’s diesel deal with Russia equals less than two weeks of U.S. Key Points President Donald Trump’s diesel deal with Russia would supply the global market with 4.8 million metric tons, or nearly 36 million barrels total.                                  This is equivalent to about 10 days of U.S. domestic demand or a little more than a single day of global demand.  The U.S. is a net diesel exporter so it does not need Russian supply, said Andy Lipow, presidenGoldman Sachs estimated the initial Russian release would only reduce wholesale diesel prices by $1 to $2 per barrel

Despite the Military Withdrawal, Trump isn’t Finished With IraqThe Trump administration is implementing a new imperial scheme to gain control of Iraq’s oil. Although President Trump appears to be winding down U.S. involvement in Iraq, declaring on September 30 that “we’re getting the hell out of there,” he is working on a new plan to crack open the country’s oil industry. By intervening in the country’s politics, including the selection of its prime minister, the president believes he can pressure the Iraqi government into accepting new oil deals that will enable U.S. energy companies to begin taking vast amounts of oil out of the country.

30 Months After Uproar Over Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar Speech, What Do His Pro-Israel Denouncers Say Now?When director Jonathan Glazer gave the acceptance speech for his film The Zone of Interest at the 2024 Academy Awards, these words caused an uproar: “All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present. Not to say, ‘Look what they did then,’ rather ‘Look what we do now.’ Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It shaped all of our past and present. Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people. Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization. How do we resist?”

Crazy Lies from the Anti-Tax Gang I came across this yesterday while reading about an initiative in my town (Astoria, Oregon) to have a vacant property tax. I have long been a big fan of vacantproperty taxes. This stems from the old saying that we should tax things that we want less of. That’s why we have big taxes on cigarettes, alcohol, and gambling. These are all things where most of us agree we would be better off with less.     The same story applies to vacant properties. We want people to live in houses, not have them sit empty some or all of the time. The way the Astoria proposal is written, vacation homes would be subject to the tax unless the owner rented them out when they aren’t there. I believe this is similar to the tax that Zohran Mamdani has proposed for New York City. The idea is that we would rather have someone living in the unit all year, but if someone is rich enough to have a second (or third or fourth) home, they can afford to pay a premium to the city to help it provide services to its residents. In the case of the Astoria proposal, the money raised would be designated for affordable housing.

Democracy, Amazon, Human Dignity: What Hangs in the Balance for Brazil’s Life-or-Death Election The choice on October 25 should not be about Lula’s limited social democratic tendencies. It is about protecting the Brazilian democratic project from a complete fascistic takeover.

Desperate US Defense of its Agent Will Not Forestall Future Uprising in BoliviaDesperate US defense of its agent will not forestall future uprising in BoliviaUS efforts to shore up conservative Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz’s troubled, almost year-long tenure recently took a bizarre turn. Measures taken to protect an agent were so extraordinary as to signal hyped-up US determination to ward off social revolution in Bolivia. Argentinian Fernando Cerimedo and his paramour Nadia Beller were close advisors of the newly-elected Paz and his family. The couple had a falling-out. Cerimedo arranged for Beller to be shot, but she survived. Hospitalized, she told reporters about Cerimedo’s crimes. He’s in prison, charged with narcotrafficking, illicit wealth, attempted murder, and domestic abuse.

India’s Cockroaches are back! Modi’s ‘Emergency’ momentAfter a summer interlude, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) are back for what remains unfinished – an all-out struggle with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the repressive state apparatus standing behind them.
